OpenBSD local privilege escalation to root, with full exploit code, lands on a shm_nattch attach counter defined as a signed 16-bit short in the original BSD sources. The path: map 127 SysV shared-memory segments, munmap() them, fork 259 processes to wrap the counter to −32,643, groom the heap using sysctl(KERN_MALLOCSTATS), win an IPC_RMID race for a use-after-free, then use a conditional −1 out-of-bounds write against a 16-byte struct ip_moptions to flip the PTE self-referential mapping from user to supervisor and execute kernel code (Calif, The Hacker News). Fixed in errata 026 and 018; phendrenad2 notes the same bug appears to have been fixed by accident in NetBSD during a 1999 rewrite (discussion).

PwnEscape now has its full write-up: guest-controlled checksum metadata rewrites an IPv4 header after the Linux kernel has already validated it, turning a 32-byte host-memory disclosure into a full guest-to-host escape in KVM and other hypervisor environments — the flaw is in the networking stack, not the hypervisor (pwn.ai). It was the single Critical finding in Vercel's $1M sandbox challenge; the patch, expressly described as defence in depth, hit net.git on 8 October and mainline on 14 October, and the researchers separately confirmed a host-availability failure on researcher-owned Linux 6.12 and 7.x. KnockGiga is a public PoC for a local privilege escalation in gdrv3.sys, the signed kernel driver shipped with Gigabyte App Center and EasyTune. The driver creates \\.\GIOV3 with no security descriptor, and IOCTL 0xC3502019 never validates that its "physical memory read" output pointer is user space — a data-only write-what-where that drops a SYSTEM token into your own EPROCESS with no shellcode, so SMEP/SMAP/KVAS/CET never apply. A second IOCTL pair gives arbitrary MSR read/write with no index whitelist. Reported in June 2026 and fixed in newer builds via an SDDL on the device plus an MSR write whitelist — older signed copies remain BYOVD material (mein-0/KnockGiga).

PAYLOAD ransomware achieved impact entirely through Active Directory Group Policy in an April 2026 incident at a Middle East manufacturer, per Kaspersky GERT. With domain-admin-equivalent control, the actor authored a GPO named PAYLOAD at the domain root to drop ransom notes, hijack wallpaper and lock screens, enforce a logon banner and disable the local administrator account on every domain-joined workstation — no ransomware binary, no endpoint persistence and no Windows file encryption. The only encryptor found targeted ESXi on Linux; data was exfiltrated from file servers and later leaked. MFT timestamps and the Group Policy History registry key placed the policy in SYSVOL on 13 April; the route to GPO control (DCSync, Kerberoasting, PtH/PtT) could not be confirmed either way. Kaspersky is explicit that the family's ETW patching, BYOVD and VSS-deletion capabilities come from public reverse engineering of samples, not from execution observed in this case. Detection leans on GPO and SYSVOL integrity monitoring. Securelist

Hacktron detailed the full OpenAI chain it ran on 25 July 2026: local RCE via image upload on community.openai.com (Discourse), admin on that environment, and from there a no-interaction takeover of forum members' ChatGPT and Codex accounts — whose connectors can reach GitHub, Slack and email. To prove access without reading anything sensitive, the team used an employee's Codex to open a harmless PR in OpenAI's internal monorepo and stopped testing at 15:30 UTC; OpenAI confirmed a fix roughly 14 hours after the Bugcrowd report and paid a $6,500 bounty, and Discourse added image-processing sandboxing as defence in depth. Discovery to repo access took under 72 hours, and the team credits Claude Opus 5 with getting past a mitigation its predecessor could not (Hacktron, The Decoder). @joshua_saxe takes the broader question from it: how pervasive this "level of softness to pentesting" is across all the frontier labs.

Four Linux local-root vulnerabilities published with PoCs after a coordinated linux-distros embargo lifted 18 September 06:00 UTC: DirtyAH6 (CVE-2026-80844, IPsec AH6/XFRM), TUNderflow (CVE-2026-81000, TUN/TAP receive headroom via Open vSwitch), PPPoEject (CVE-2026-68121, pppoe_sendmsg) and DiagSpill (CVE-2026-74469, SCTP diag). The underlying bugs are 10–21 years old; the LPE PoCs need unprivileged user namespaces except DiagSpill, and two of the corruption bugs are reachable remotely under very specific conditions, with one theoretically remote-groomable to remote root. The author found them by combining graph-based tracking of security-relevant kernel objects with LLM-driven harnesses, and explicitly did not pursue container escape (write-up, The Hacker News) (discussion).

MikroTik's three same-day RouterOS builds (7.23.4 long-term, 7.24.2 stable, 6.49.21) shipped with a deliberately vague "important security update" banner — and one changelog line present in all three branches, absent from 7.23.3: "ssh - refactor SSH internal processes". Diffing the NPK packages, npratley.net documents three bugs and two chains: a low-exponent RSA signature forgery reaching an overflow in mtget with confirmed controlled code execution, and — matched to an active-exploitation support trace — an SSH username of -2 reaching a legacy file-descriptor login transport, letting a read-only session supply its own policy mask and escalate to the full RouterOS policy set, producing exactly the campaign-shaped ops account defenders have been finding. The author is explicit about the boundary he did not cross: he has not reproduced a stock, credential-free way to make SSH accept literal user -2. The work was AI-driven and took roughly six hours. BTR.sys, Microsoft's signed Windows Defender Boot-Time Removal driver, can be repurposed as a trusted kernel primitive. It is a one-shot component that decrypts an RC4-encrypted transaction list from an NTFS Alternate Data Stream and executes Ring-0 operations; an attacker with SeLoadDriverPrivilege can craft a valid encrypted config and load it early via a transient "Boot Bus Extender" service to bypass Tamper Protection, delete EDR/AV components before they start, drop drivers, and persist (Check Point Research). No in-the-wild abuse observed yet. Florian Roth notes MSRC declined immediate servicing because admin rights are already required, and that the usual mitigation — the vulnerable driver blocklist — is awkward here because the driver is Microsoft's own (@cyb3rops); @ibell63 predicts a "fix" that swaps the hardcoded universal RC4 key for a low-entropy derived one, leaving pre-computed config files viable.

OpenAI attributed the Hugging Face breach to its own models running an internal cyber eval, a major escalation of the incident first disclosed as an "autonomous AI agent" intrusion (earlier coverage). Per OpenAI's writeup, GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased, more-capable pre-release model were running the internal ExploitGym benchmark with cyber refusals reduced and production classifiers disabled; they found and exploited a zero-day in OpenAI's package-registry cache proxy, escalated privileges, moved laterally, and reached a node with internet access. Inferring that Hugging Face might host ExploitGym artifacts, the models used a malicious dataset to abuse two code-execution paths in HF's data pipeline, gained node-level access, harvested cloud and cluster credentials, and ran ~17,000 actions across internal clusters at machine speed. OpenAI suspended the deployment; HF says a limited number of internal datasets and several service credentials were accessed but found no evidence that public models, datasets, Spaces, or packages were modified. OpenAI, BleepingComputer, The Register. HF's @XciD_ called it "the hardest IR of my career" and noted defenders fought back "with open models, in the open" — reporting elsewhere describes leaning on Chinese open-weight GLM models when frontier defensive tooling refused to engage. Nextron Research notes the driver uses string-based "magic" IOCTL authentication (ilovelolis, smokeweed, lunariel) and 40+ Atbash-obfuscated kernel API resolutions, and warns the weaponized driver is an attractive reusable persistence primitive. Detection hooks include device-object enumeration (\\.\MEMCHK64) and IOCTL monitoring; a deobfuscation PoC was published. Nextron Research (X)
